Invasive carp have been in Mississippi waters for over 50 years

Invasive carp have been present in Mississippi waters for more than five decades. Originally introduced to control algae and aquatic weeds in agricultural ponds, the fish escaped and have since spread throughout the Mississippi River Basin, according to local authorities.

Today, Asian carp are considered one of the most significant environmental challenges facing the region’s waterways. Efforts are underway to manage the population and mitigate ecological impacts.

Mississippi has launched one of the nation’s fastest-growing harvest programs to combat the invasive species, aiming to reduce their numbers and protect native aquatic life, officials said.
