Mississippi Disaster Centers Remain Open for Winter Storm Victims

Disaster Service Centers are open in several Mississippi counties through June 10 for residents affected by Winter Storm Fern, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

The centers are available in Alcorn, Benton, Carroll, Coahoma, Lafayette, Leflore, Marshall, Montgomery, Panola, Pontotoc, Tallahatchie, Tishomingo, and Yazoo counties. They operate Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The centers are closed on Sundays, and the application deadline is June 10.

FEMA officials said residents can apply for assistance without visiting a center by registering online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, calling 1-800-621-FEMA, or using the FEMA app. Those using relay services are advised to provide FEMA with the appropriate contact number.

Assistance includes grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans for uninsured property losses, and other recovery programs. Federal funding is available to residents in numerous counties and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, according to FEMA.

Officials emphasized that applying for aid does not affect Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits and that residents do not need to visit a Disaster Recovery Center to register for assistance.
