Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell announced new leadership appointments Tuesday. James Herzog has been named deputy commissioner and director of the Mississippi State Bureau of Investigation.
Herzog has served as lieutenant colonel of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation since 2024 and brings more than 30 years of law enforcement experience. Under the new structure created by House Bill 1612, Herzog will oversee the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, and the Mississippi Forensics Laboratory. Colonel Phillip Pope will serve as deputy director of the Bureau of Narcotics.
Joshua Bromen was also appointed as deputy commissioner and director of the Mississippi Law Enforcement Division. Bromen has extensive experience in law enforcement leadership, having previously served as director of the Office of Public Safety and Planning. His responsibilities under the new law include overseeing the Office of Public Safety and Planning, the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers’ Training Academy, the Driver Service Bureau, and the Office of Standards and Training.
Jim Brinson was named director of the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security. He has served as interim director and deputy director of the office. Brinson has a background in homeland security, emergency preparedness, and public safety, with expertise in active shooter response and terrorism prevention. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he is committed to enhancing partnerships and training efforts across the state.
Governor Tate Reeves praised the appointments, emphasizing the importance of strong leadership in public safety. Reeves stated that Herzog, Bromen, and Brinson are outstanding choices and expressed confidence in their ability to serve Mississippi communities effectively.
Commissioner Tindell also expressed pride in the new appointees, highlighting their dedication and professionalism. He noted that each has demonstrated a commitment to public safety and looks forward to their continued impact in their new roles.
