Mississippi officials have announced the opening of hand-grabbing season, which runs from May 1 through July 15. During this period, anglers can participate in one of the state’s most unique fishing traditions.
Hand-grabbing involves reaching into underwater holes to catch catfish, a practice that is legal only during this designated season in Mississippi. The method has a long history in the state and is considered a thrilling challenge for fishermen.
According to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, some of the largest blue and flathead catfish in the state are caught using this technique each year. The department encourages those interested to learn more about the season and regulations on its website.
