Two men arrested in Prentiss County burglary and drug case

Prentiss County sheriff’s deputies arrested two men in connection with a burglary at a residence on County Road 5075 on May 22, according to sheriff’s office reports.

Deputies responded to the scene around 9:34 a.m. after the homeowner’s sister reported that two shirtless men had forced entry into the home. She told deputies she saw the suspects on security camera footage and that they fled into the wooded area behind the residence as she arrived.

Authorities located and detained the suspects without incident. They were identified as Jacob Wayne Mears, 29, of Baldwyn, and Aaron Eddie Kelly, 37, also of Baldwyn. A search of the suspects yielded multiple items belonging to the homeowner, including a large amount of methamphetamine found near their arrest site.

The homeowner also reported that items had been stolen from a disabled vehicle on the property and placed into a 2008 GMC Sierra registered to Mears. The truck, backed into the driveway with a trailer loaded with appliances, also contained a .22 revolver recovered by deputies. The homeowner identified the weapon as stolen from under his bed.

Security camera footage showed both suspects entering and exiting the residence. Investigators interviewed the homeowners and suspects. Mears faces charges including burglary of a dwelling, burglary of an automobile, and possession of methamphetamine with a firearm enhancement. Kelly faces similar charges, plus possession of a weapon by a felon. Both suspects are under supervision by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Bond was set at $150,000 for Mears and $200,000 for Kelly during their initial appearance before Justice Court Judge Ray Hall. Both are currently at the Prentiss County Jail. Investigators plan to present the cases to a county grand jury, with charges including burglary, theft, drug possession, and weapons violations.
