MDWFP offers bear-safety tips for Mississippi deer hunters

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks says deer season is underway in Mississippi and hunters may encounter black bears in the woods. The agency shared safety steps meant to help prevent unwanted encounters and said hunters should remain calm and keep their distance if they see a bear.

MDWFP said hunters should recover harvested deer as quickly as possible, especially if bears are known to be in the area. If a bear has found a harvested deer, the agency said hunters should consider bringing a partner to help with recovery or driving a vehicle directly to the carcass if possible. The department also said never to approach a bear that is feeding on or guarding a carcass.

The agency said bear attacks are very rare, but hunters may consider carrying bear spray or an air horn as added safety precautions. MDWFP also advised hunters to remove food, scented items and foam seat cushions from hunting stands after each hunt to avoid attracting bears.

MDWFP said hunters should bury deer carcasses or dispose of remains as far away from deer camp and other frequently used areas as possible, while following applicable disposal regulations. The agency also said wildlife feeders can attract bears and suggested using bear-resistant feeder designs when possible.
