Trash & Treasures Yard Sale Runs Oct. 2-3 in Tishomingo County
Bargain hunters are hitting the roads of Northeast Mississippi this weekend as the annual Tishomingo County yard sale, Trash & Treasures Along the Tenn-Tom, runs Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2-3. The event stretches more than 50 miles through the county, with sellers setting up along Highway 25 and Highway 72 from the Tennessee state line to Burnsville and down toward the Itawamba County line.
Tishomingo County Tourism, which promotes the event, describes it as one of the South’s largest yard sales. It is held every year on the first Friday and Saturday in October and draws an estimated 3,000-plus shoppers, according to the tourism office.
Where to find the Tishomingo County yard sale
According to Tishomingo County Tourism, sales are set up along and near the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway on these routes:
- Highway 25 north from Iuka to the Mississippi-Tennessee state line
- Highway 25 south through the Belmont and Golden area to the Tishomingo-Itawamba county line
- Old Highway 72 (Highway 172) toward Burnsville
- Highway 72 east in Burnsville
The central meeting point is the intersection of Highway 72 and Highway 25 in Iuka, where many shoppers begin their route.
Free to set up, open to everyone
Tourism officials say there is no charge to set up a booth along the route, and spaces are first-come, first-served. Families cleaning out closets, churches and school groups raising money, and regular vendors all take part. Some private property owners who host clusters of sellers may charge their own fee for space, so sellers should check with the landowner before unloading.
Shoppers can expect everything from household goods and clothing to antiques, tools, furniture, crafts and collectibles. The event has been a fall tradition in the county for years and grew out of a Tishomingo County Tourism project tied to the Tenn-Tom Waterway corridor.
Weather and travel tips
Shoppers should plan around the weather. The National Weather Service forecast for the area calls for showers and thunderstorms becoming likely Friday afternoon, with a 70 percent chance of rain, and a lingering chance of storms Saturday. Bringing a rain jacket and checking the radar before heading out is a good idea.
- Expect slow traffic and vehicles pulling on and off the shoulder along Highways 25 and 72.
- Use turn signals and pull completely off the roadway when stopping.
- Bring cash in small bills, since many sellers do not take cards.
- Watch for pedestrians crossing near busy sale sites.
Northeast Mississippi remains under dry conditions, and Alcorn County is under an emergency burn ban through Oct. 12. For more on the storms expected this weekend, see our report on the drought and Friday’s storm chances.
