Corinth Football Blanks South Pontotoc 63-0 in Division Opener

Corinth football wasted no time in its division opener. The Warriors shut out South Pontotoc 63-0 Thursday night at Corinth Warrior Stadium, according to the Corinth Touchdown Club, in a game moved up a day because of Friday’s storm forecast.

The Touchdown Club called it “a statement win to open division play.” The game was the only area contest officially moved to Thursday at press time, according to the Daily Corinthian. The rest of the area’s schedule remains set for Friday night, though fans should watch for weather updates.

Corinth football gets back on track after bye week

The win came after Corinth’s open date last Friday. Before the break, the Warriors split their first four games, according to MaxPreps: wins at New Hope (28-21) and at Houston (24-21), and close home losses to Itawamba AHS (21-14) and Pontotoc (17-14).

Thursday’s rout moved Corinth to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in division play. Corinth travels to North Pontotoc next Friday, Oct. 9, then returns home to face Tishomingo County on Oct. 16.

Friday: Kossuth hosts unbeaten Booneville

The marquee area matchup Friday is a Division 1-3A opener between two hot teams. Kossuth hosts Booneville, with both teams entering on winning streaks.

  • Booneville (4-0) has beaten North Pontotoc, Baldwyn, Biggersville and Ripley, outscoring opponents 170-66, according to MaxPreps.
  • Kossuth (3-2) has won three straight after an 0-2 start, beating Tishomingo County, Nettleton and North Pontotoc.

Kossuth coach Brian Kelly and Booneville coach Scott Brown both told the Daily Corinthian their teams have kept their strong non-division starts in perspective heading into this game.

Other area games Friday

  • Alcorn Central at Belmont: The Golden Bears (3-2) open division play riding a 26-8 win over Biggersville last week. It is the program’s first three-win season since 2021.

Fans heading to Friday games should plan for rain. The National Weather Service forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms becoming likely Friday afternoon and continuing into the evening before tapering off after 9 p.m. Check team and school social media pages for any late schedule changes.
