Booneville Aldermen Cut Wheeler Drive Speed Limit to 20 mph

Booneville aldermen voted to lower the speed limit on East and West Wheeler Drive to 20 mph, responding to residents who say drivers speed through the neighborhood while children are playing outside. The Booneville speed limit change was among several items approved at the board’s meeting this week, according to the Booneville Banner-Independent.

Booneville Speed Limit Change on Wheeler Drive

Police Chief Michael Ramey asked the board to set the limit at 20 mph. West Wheeler Drive is currently posted at 30 mph, and East Wheeler Drive has no posted limit. Ramey said he has received several calls from residents about speeding, especially when children are in the area.

Other Actions by the Board

  • Approved placing liens on four properties to recover city cleanup costs.
  • Approved a new meter reader for the gas and water departments, paid for with ARPA funds, and an electric pipe fusion machine for the same departments.
  • Approved hiring Grace Freeman as a full-time police officer, and two full-time street maintenance employees.
  • Approved purchase of a 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe for the police department from its special assessment account.
  • Allowed the Booneville Housing Authority to install speed bumps at three of its complexes at its own cost.

Sewer Pumping Station Grant

Aldermen also approved a letter committing city funds to the matching portion of an Appalachian Regional Commission grant to replace a sewer pumping station. The station serves North Second Street, Jumpertown, the West Prentiss Industrial Park and other industrial areas.

Residents with questions about the new speed limit or city purchases can contact Booneville City Hall. Exact dollar figures for the individual items are available in the board’s official minutes.
