Fall weather safety notices cover tornado prep, ShakeOut and fire danger
MEMA shares tornado safety guidance during Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week includes a tornado safety reminder: identify a safe place before a tornado threatens. The graphic says top-floor rooms, exterior rooms and rooms with windows do not protect you, and that no place outside is safe from a tornado.
If you do not have a basement or storm shelter, MEMA says to move to an interior room with no windows, such as a bathroom, hallway or staircase, and to protect your head and neck. The graphic also says to bring an emergency supply kit.

MEMA promotes Thursday’s Great ShakeOut earthquake drill
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says Thursday, Oct. 15, is the Great ShakeOut, the world’s largest earthquake drill. The post says people worldwide will drop, cover and hold on at 10:15 a.m. and can register at ShakeOut.org.
MEMA shared the reminder during Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week and paired it with an earthquake preparedness video. The post says it is important to be prepared even though earthquakes are not the focus of this week’s severe-weather outreach.

NWS Memphis warns of elevated fire danger Friday after a cold front
The National Weather Service in Memphis says wildland fire danger will be elevated Friday, especially west of Interstate 55, after a strong cold front moves through. The graphic says the risk rises when wind gusts are greater than 30 mph and relative humidity is below 40 percent.
The service advises people to dispose of cigarettes and matches properly, avoid equipment that creates sparks, extinguish campfires and obey local burn bans.
