Alcorn County Supervisors Reappoint Magnolia, CVB Board Members

The Alcorn County supervisors had a short agenda at their Monday, Nov. 2 meeting in Corinth. They reappointed two longtime members of county-backed boards, heard that paving on a stretch of Farmington Road is only days away, and met privately with the county’s top economic developer about a possible new business.

The meeting ran on the eve of Election Day. Most of the work was routine, but several items affect county residents directly: hospital oversight, tourism spending, road conditions east of Corinth, and holiday office hours.

Alcorn County Supervisors Make Two Reappointments

The board voted to keep two sitting members in their seats:

  • Steve Gaines was reappointed to the Magnolia Regional Health Center Board of Directors. Gaines, the director of Northeast Mississippi Community Services, was first named to the hospital board five years ago. Magnolia is jointly owned by the City of Corinth and Alcorn County, so its board appointments come from local government.
  • John James was reappointed to the Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors. James is a general manager at Refreshments Inc. and fills one of the board’s restaurant-industry seats. The city and county appoint that seat jointly, so the Corinth Board of Aldermen must also approve the reappointment.

The board also approved two part-time hires for the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department. Both are retirees coming back to county work, according to the Daily Corinthian. One will continue overseeing the inmate litter crew that cleans up county roads.

Farmington Road Paving Expected Within Days

Drivers who use Farmington Road east of Corinth will see crews out soon. Johnny Crotts of Cook Coggin Engineers told supervisors that milling is finished on the Farmington Road surfacing project and paving should follow within a few days.

  • Length: about 1.1 miles of new asphalt
  • Limits: from the easternmost of the two bridges east of Pinecrest Road to the west side of Kimberly Clark Parkway
  • Contractor: Cook & Son Construction

Expect lane restrictions and flaggers while the paving is under way, and allow extra time on the route.

Homestead Reimbursements and Holiday Closures

The board was told that the Mississippi Department of Revenue has reported homestead exemption reimbursements for the period that ended Dec. 31, 2025. The state pays these to make up for property tax revenue lost to homestead exemptions:

  • Alcorn County: $211,100
  • Alcorn School District: $141,450

Residents planning a trip to the courthouse or another county office should note the upcoming holidays. All Alcorn County offices will be closed on:

  • Wednesday, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day
  • Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26 and 27 for Thanksgiving

Executive Session on a Possible New Business

Before adjourning, supervisors went into executive session with G.T. McCullough, president of The Alliance, the Corinth and Alcorn County economic development and chamber group. The closed session covered a site location for a possible new business. No project name, company, or job numbers were released. Mississippi’s open meetings law allows closed sessions about the prospective location of a business or industry.

Alcorn News MS will report any announcement once the project is made public.
