Corinth Board of Aldermen Opens New Term Tonight

The Corinth Board of Aldermen starts its new four-year term with a busy organizational meeting this evening, Tuesday, Nov. 3. The agenda the city posted Monday shows the board will certify the results of the city’s general election, swear in officials, choose a mayor pro-tem, and decide who will run city departments for the next term.

The aldermen are scheduled to take the oath of office at 4:30 p.m. The regular meeting follows at 5 p.m. at City Hall, 300 Childs Street. Meetings are open to the public.

Mayor Ralph Dance and Police Chief Landon Tucker were sworn in for their new terms on Oct. 19. Dance won a second term in the Oct. 13 city election. See our earlier story on the Corinth mayor and police chief swearing-in.

Corinth Board of Aldermen Organizes for the New Term

The first part of the agenda covers the steps every new board takes:

  • Approving the general election results
  • Approving the oaths and qualifications of the newly elected officials
  • Adopting Robert’s Rules of Order to run meetings
  • Setting the board’s meeting days and times for the new term
  • Appointing a mayor pro-tem, who leads meetings when the mayor is absent

The agenda letterhead lists the aldermen as Michael McFall (at-large), Johnny Butler (Ward 1), Noah McQueen (Ward 2), Danny Timmons (Ward 3), Steve Hill (Ward 4) and Joshua Bryant (Ward 5).

Department Heads Up for Reappointment

Several of the city’s key jobs are filled by the board at the start of each term. Tonight the aldermen will consider:

  • Reappointing the city clerk, city tax collector, fire chief and street commissioner, then swearing in the city clerk and tax collector
  • Re-hiring the community planning and development director/building official, the code enforcement officer, the sewer line crew supervisor and the court clerk
  • Hiring a city attorney and a city prosecutor

The board also plans an executive session on fire department personnel and on hiring a city judge. Mississippi law lets public boards discuss personnel matters in closed session. Any votes would be taken in open session.

Insurance, Property Cleanup and a Beer License

Ordinary city business is also on the agenda:

  • Insurance: Canopy Nation will present health insurance proposals for city employees. Sunstar Insurance Services will present building insurance proposals for city-owned buildings.
  • Property cleanup: The board will hold adjudication hearings on four properties, including addresses on Rolling Wood Circle, Daniel Drive, North Parkway and Jackson Street. It will also continue hearings on nine more, including addresses on Maple Road, Third Street, Linden Street and Norman Road. These hearings decide whether a property is a menace to public health and safety and must be cleaned up.
  • Election pay: extra pay for the city’s election commissioners, as allowed by state law
  • Beer license: an application for Porters’ on Franklin at 112 Franklin Street

Department heads will also give reports. The police department is seeking quotes for new uniforms. The street and solid waste department wants to advertise for a single-axle dump truck. Planning and development is asking the board to approve the third payment to Tombigbee Construction for the restroom renovation at the Coliseum.

How to Follow the Meeting

Residents can attend in person at City Hall. The full agenda is posted on the city’s website at corinthms.gov. The agenda is subject to change, and items can be added, tabled or removed at the meeting. Alcorn News MS will report on the board’s major decisions.
