NWS Memphis warns of windy Election Day and storm risk later today

The National Weather Service in Memphis warned Tuesday that Election Day will start breezy across the Mid-South, with a Wind Advisory in effect from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for parts of Northeast Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel.

The weather service said sustained winds will run 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. It urged people to secure loose outdoor items and said high-profile vehicles may have trouble on the roads.

For later in the day, the same outlook shows most of the region in a Level 1, or Marginal Risk, for isolated severe storms from 2 p.m. to midnight. The main threats are damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, localized flash flooding and an isolated tornado that cannot be ruled out.

NWS Memphis said anyone heading out to vote this afternoon or evening should take an umbrella, drive carefully and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. The severe-weather graphic is valid through 6 a.m. Wednesday.
