Battle of Corinth Anniversary Concert Set for Oct. 3

Corinth will mark the Battle of Corinth anniversary with a free evening of live music next month. Shiloh National Military Park and Visit Corinth are holding a concert on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center to remember the 164th anniversary of the 1862 battle.

The National Park Service announced the event in a Sept. 21 news release. Admission is free and the concert is open to the public.

The park service suggests bringing lawn chairs and inviting friends and family to spend the evening outdoors at the center.

“Music has a remarkable way of bringing history to life,” said Acting Superintendent Randy Martin of Shiloh National Military Park. He said the concert gives people a chance to remember what happened in Corinth in 1862.

Who is performing

Two acts are on the bill.

Steve and Lisa Ball, a husband-and-wife duo from Columbus, Ohio, will open the show. Their programs mix songs with stories about where the music came from, the history around it, and the soldiers and musicians who played and heard it during the Civil War era. The pair also perform on vintage instruments from that period.

Pride of the North Bank, a bluegrass band from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, will headline. The group is known for blending vintage country, bluegrass and Americana.

Why the Battle of Corinth matters

Corinth was one of the most important crossroads in the western theater of the Civil War. Two major railroads, the Memphis & Charleston and the Mobile & Ohio, crossed in the town, which made it a key target for both armies.

On Oct. 3 and 4, 1862, Confederate forces tried to take the town back from the Union army that held it. The Union defenders held on after two days of hard fighting, and Corinth stayed in Union hands. The concert falls on the same date the fighting began 164 years ago.

Today the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center is part of Shiloh National Military Park’s Corinth unit. It tells the story of the siege and battle, the town’s role as a rail hub, and the contraband camp where formerly enslaved people found refuge during the war.
