Corinth police arrested a 39-year-old man on kidnapping and attempted murder charges following the Oct. 1 shooting near Scott Street, according to the department. The arrest leads the Oct. 3 Alcorn County roundup, which also includes a canceled anniversary concert, area football results, a drug-trafficking sentence and a phone-scam warning.
Police announce arrest in Corinth shooting
Bacarra Lamar Hill, 39, of Corinth, was taken into custody during a traffic stop about 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, police said. Officers and detectives worked with the Corinth-Alcorn County SWAT team. Police allege Hill took the victim at gunpoint and later shot that person at another location.
The victim was found in the roadway Thursday afternoon and flown to Regional One Health in Memphis. The source report says authorities had not released the victim’s name or current condition. Battle of Corinth concert canceled
Shiloh National Military Park canceled the free concert scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center because of the weather forecast. No make-up date has been announced. The program was planned to mark the 164th anniversary of the Battle of Corinth, fought Oct. 3–4, 1862. Alcorn Central wins; Kossuth and Biggersville fall
Alcorn Central beat Belmont 36–20 on Friday, Oct. 2, improving to 4–2 with its third consecutive victory. Unbeaten Booneville won 44–22 at Kossuth, dropping the Aggies to 3–3, while Baldwyn shut out Biggersville 47–0. Corinth’s 63–0 win over South Pontotoc came Thursday, Oct. 1, after the game was moved ahead of forecast storms.

Drug case involving Alcorn agencies brings prison sentence
Zane Miller, 32, of Booneville, received a 15-year prison sentence without parole in Prentiss County Circuit Court on Thursday, Oct. 1, after pleading guilty to methamphetamine trafficking, the First Circuit District Attorney’s Office said. Judge John R. White also imposed 25 suspended years and five years of post-release supervision.
The district attorney’s office said Miller faced drug charges in Alcorn and Prentiss counties. Investigating agencies included the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department and members of the North Mississippi Narcotics Unit. Read the sentencing report.
Sheriff warns of jury-duty payment scam
The Prentiss County Sheriff’s Department issued a warning Friday, Oct. 2, after reports of callers posing as federal law enforcement officers and demanding money for supposedly missed jury duty. The department said conversations with nearby sheriffs indicated the scam was widespread; the report also notes earlier Alcorn County warnings about callers impersonating officers.
Residents should hang up, avoid sharing financial information and verify any claimed summons directly with the relevant court clerk using an independently obtained number. Read the scam warning.
