Battle of Corinth Concert Canceled Due to Weather
The Battle of Corinth concert planned for Saturday evening, Oct. 3, at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center has been canceled because of the weather forecast, Shiloh National Military Park announced. The free outdoor show was one of the main events planned to mark the 164th anniversary of the 1862 battle. The park said no make-up date has been scheduled.
Battle of Corinth Concert Called Off, No New Date Yet
The National Park Service and Visit Corinth had planned the evening of live music for 5 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of the Interpretive Center, which is part of Shiloh National Military Park. Visitors had been told to bring lawn chairs for an evening billed as a way to bring history to life through music.
The lineup included:
- Steve & Lisa Ball, who perform Civil War-era songs on period instruments and tell stories from the era
- Pride of the North Bank, a group that plays bluegrass, vintage country and Americana
In its update, the park thanked everyone who had planned to attend and apologized for the inconvenience. It said it hopes to see the public at future park events. The national Civil War preservation group American Battlefield Trust also marked the concert as canceled due to weather in its online events listing.
National Weather Service forecasts for Corinth on Saturday called for mostly cloudy skies and a slight chance of showers, with better chances for showers and thunderstorms late tonight into Sunday morning.
Remembering the Battle of Corinth, Oct. 3-4, 1862
Saturday marks 164 years since Confederate forces under Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn opened their attack on the Union defenders of Corinth. In a post marking the anniversary, the park noted that over two days of fighting in brutal heat, about 23,000 Federal soldiers under Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans were pushed back to the town’s innermost defenses. They held on to the key railroad crossroads and turned back the Confederate assault. The climactic fighting came at Battery Robinett on Oct. 4, 1862.
Much of the battlefield has been lost to Corinth’s growth since the Civil War. Even so, the park says visitors to the Interpretive Center can still find several battle sites around town, including Battery Robinett. Park rangers at the center can give directions to the town’s Civil War sites.
Visiting the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center
The canceled concert does not affect regular visits. The Interpretive Center remains a popular stop for history fans, school groups and travelers following Corinth’s Civil War story, from the 1862 siege after Shiloh to the October battle and the town’s contraband camp.
