Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) officials remembered Hurricane Katrina on its 21st anniversary Saturday. The storm made landfall along the Mississippi Gulf Coast on Aug. 29, 2005, and was the largest natural disaster to hit the United States at the time, according to MEMA.
In Mississippi, 238 people lost their lives due to the hurricane. MEMA officials paid tribute to those who died, as well as the families and communities forever affected by the storm. They also recognized the efforts of countless individuals who helped Mississippi recover and rebuild in the aftermath.
Officials highlighted the courage and compassion of those who responded during the crisis and expressed gratitude for their ongoing dedication. MEMA emphasized that the memory of Hurricane Katrina continues to inspire efforts to prepare for future disasters.
“We remember. We honor. We will never forget,” MEMA said in a statement.
