Corinth Aldermen Name McFall Mayor Pro Tem as New Term Begins

The Corinth aldermen opened their new term this week by electing Alderman Michael McFall as mayor pro tem, renewing employee health coverage and approving added costs on two city infrastructure projects, according to the Daily Corinthian. The Corinth aldermen mayor pro tem vote came at the board’s first business meeting of the term on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Corinth’s six aldermen took the oath of office and posed for photos before getting down to business. Mayor Ralph Dance and the police chief had been sworn in on an earlier date. After the housekeeping items that come with any new term, the board handled mostly routine matters and then went into a lengthy executive session.

Corinth aldermen pick mayor pro tem

The board chose McFall, the alderman at large, to serve as mayor pro tem. The mayor pro tem presides over board meetings and handles the mayor’s duties when the mayor is absent. McFall had a head start on the new term after spending the last couple of months finishing out the remainder of Ben Albarracin’s term, the newspaper reported.

Health and property insurance

Aldermen agreed to stay with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi for city employees’ health insurance for another year, with no plan changes and no cost increase. The board also reviewed the city’s annual property insurance renewal. During that review, officials found that a city-owned structure on South Fulton Drive had never been listed on the building insurance, so it was added.

Street and drainage projects

Two infrastructure items drew board action:

  • North Polk Street: crack sealing on North Polk Street added $13,645.18 to the Polk Street bridge project. The work was covered with money left in the contract after the bridge and paving work was finished.
  • Coke area drainage: the cost of a drainage project in the Coke area went up by $39,740 after crews found sewer lines that were not on city maps and need to be replaced.

Both changes reflect the kind of surprises that often come with older underground utilities. The board’s actions keep the projects moving without a new bid.

Looking ahead

The Corinth Board of Mayor and Aldermen meets at City Hall. Agendas and notices are posted on the city’s website at corinthms.gov. Residents can attend the public meetings or contact their ward alderman with questions about city projects.
