Isaias Power Outages Hit Glen, Corinth as Winds Gust
Wind gusts from the remnants of Hurricane Isaias knocked out power to hundreds of customers across Alcorn and Tishomingo counties on Saturday. Alcorn County Electric Power Association (ACE Power) said a large outage hit the Glen area. The co-op’s outage graphic showed 498 outages on its system as of 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Utility crews spent the afternoon finding damaged lines and restoring service as the storm’s outer bands brought steady rain and gusty north winds to Northeast Mississippi.
Isaias power outages in Glen and Corinth
In a Facebook update posted Saturday afternoon, ACE Power said wind gusts caused a large outage in the Glen area and that crews were sent to assess the damage. At 3:45 p.m., the co-op said it had found the cause of the Glen outage, was making repairs, and expected power to be restored there “very soon.”
ACE Power also said crews were working on a pole behind Belk in Corinth that had cut power to a few nearby businesses, and that the outage should be cleared within a few hours.
Tishomingo County Electric reports downed wire on Highway 25
Tishomingo County Electric Power Association also reported storm outages on its system Saturday. The co-op said crews were working the outages as the wind moved through and had already restored several. In an update, TCEPA said a wire was down on Highway 25 south of Littrell Lumber and that the repair should clear the large Midway-area outage.
Around 5 p.m. Saturday, the tracking site PowerOutage.us listed about 280 customers without power in Alcorn County. Most were served by Tishomingo County EPA, which serves part of eastern Alcorn County, and about 20 were ACE Power customers. The site showed no outages for Prentiss County EPA at that time.
Wind and rain from Isaias
The National Weather Service in Memphis issued a Wind Advisory for Alcorn, Prentiss and Tishomingo counties for Saturday, warning of gusts up to about 40 mph that could bring down tree limbs and power lines. Observations at Corinth’s Roscoe Turner Airport showed rain on and off through the afternoon, with sustained north winds of 10 to 15 mph and gusts above 20 mph.
The rain is expected to taper off overnight, followed by sunny, warmer weather starting Sunday.
Outage safety tips
- Stay far away from any downed power line, and assume it is energized. Do not drive over it or try to move it.
- Report outages and downed lines to your electric co-op: ACE Power for most of Alcorn County, Tishomingo County EPA for Tishomingo and parts of eastern Alcorn, and Prentiss County EPA for Prentiss County.
- Run generators outdoors only, well away from windows and doors, to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Treat any intersection with a dark traffic signal as a four-way stop.
