CORINTH — Rain from the remnants of Hurricane Isaias reached Northeast Mississippi on Saturday, Oct. 10, while all of Alcorn County remained in severe drought. The county’s burn ban is listed to expire Monday, Oct. 12, and a wind advisory continues through Saturday evening, according to newly published Alcorn County News coverage.

Rain arrives, but drought and burn restrictions remain
The U.S. Drought Monitor map dated Oct. 6 and released Thursday placed 100% of Alcorn County in severe drought for a second consecutive week. Tishomingo County was also entirely in severe drought, while about 68% of Prentiss County was in that category. The Mississippi Forestry Commission’s list, updated Friday, shows Alcorn’s burn ban running through Oct. 12. Saturday’s report said no decision had been announced on an extension.
The National Weather Service in Memphis forecast showers in Corinth Saturday afternoon and overnight, clearing before about 4 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11. Its Saturday outlook called for north winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph under an advisory lasting until 8 p.m. Forecasters warned of falling limbs and possible power outages. Friday’s wind-advisory report had forecast gusts up to 45 mph and described a flood watch lasting until 7 a.m. Sunday. It also relayed precautions from NWS Memphis, including securing loose outdoor objects, keeping ways to receive warnings and avoiding flooded roads. Cat Reman Challenge 5K switches to virtual format
Caterpillar moved the Oct. 10 in-person race in Corinth to a virtual event because of the forecast wind and heavy rain. Participants have until Oct. 24 to complete their 5K on their own route; registered runners will receive email instructions about shirts, medals and submitting times. Overall and age-group prizes remain planned, with door-prize drawings for those who submit times.
The reported registration fee is $25, with online signup closing Oct. 17 at 11:59 p.m. Proceeds benefit United Way of Corinth and Alcorn County. Read the virtual race details and registration information.
Corinth and Alcorn Central earn district football wins
Corinth beat North Pontotoc 52-7 at Ecru on Thursday, Oct. 8, improving to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in district play. In Friday’s results, Alcorn Central defeated Mantachie 39-14 at Glen to reach 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the district. Booneville beat Belmont 41-6 to remain unbeaten at 6-0, and Tishomingo County defeated South Pontotoc 35-16.

Special prosecutor takes over Prentiss County murder case
Former 14th Circuit District Attorney Dee Bates will prosecute Jayce Bryson West’s case after First Circuit District Attorney Jason Herring recused his office, according to Alcorn County News’s report citing the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal. The First Circuit district includes Alcorn County. The reported conflict involved an unrelated, decade-old youth-court matter handled by Herring’s former private-practice partner for West’s mother.
West is accused in the Aug. 19, 2024, shooting death of 18-year-old Damarion Calvin in Booneville. The Daily Journal described the upcoming proceeding as a second-degree murder trial; no trial date was included. West is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
