CORINTH, Miss. — Alcorn County candidates hitting the campaign trail this fall should take note: the Mississippi Department of Transportation says political campaign signs are not allowed within the right-of-way on state highways.
Under Section 63-3-317 of the Mississippi Code of 1972, the highway right-of-way includes driving lanes, shoulders and mowed areas — and can reach 300 feet or more from the centerline of the driving lanes, according to MDOT.
MDOT crews will remove any signs placed illegally in the right-of-way. Removed signs are kept for two weeks at a local MDOT maintenance facility before being discarded, and candidates may pick up their signs without penalty.
The agency also warns that signs with steel or wooden posts pose hazards to roadside workers and equipment, can become projectiles if struck by mowers, and must never block a driver’s sight distance at intersections. No signs are allowed in limited-access right-of-way.
