Shiloh Veterans Day Bus Tour Free for Vets Nov. 11
Veterans in Corinth and across Northeast Mississippi can see one of the Civil War’s most important battlefields free of charge next week. Shiloh National Military Park will offer a free Shiloh Veterans Day bus tour on Wednesday, Nov. 11, for veterans, active-duty service members and their spouses. Seats are limited, and you must register in advance.
The park is about 20 miles north of Corinth, just over the Tennessee line near Pickwick Lake, so it is an easy Veterans Day trip for families in Alcorn, Tishomingo and Prentiss counties.

A Battlefield Preserved by Veterans
The Veterans Day tour suits the park’s history. Shiloh National Military Park was created in 1894, when President Grover Cleveland signed the law establishing it. Veterans of the battle pushed for its creation. For many years the park was overseen by a commission of veterans who had fought there, from both the North and the South.
The Battle of Shiloh was fought on April 6 and 7, 1862. It was one of the bloodiest battles of the war up to that point. The fighting at Shiloh was tied closely to Corinth, since control of the city’s railroad crossing was a main goal of the campaign. That link is why the park also includes the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center on West Linden Street in Corinth.
More Veterans Day Events Near Corinth
The Shiloh tour starts at noon, so veterans can also attend Corinth’s events that morning. The Corinth Veterans Day parade steps off downtown at 10 a.m. Nov. 11, and the Corinth VFW serves a free lunch to veterans afterward. Anyone hoping to do both should plan for the roughly 30-minute drive north to the park.
Because space on the bus is limited, veterans who want a seat should call the park soon.
