LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. — Three children were flown to hospitals for medical care after a Lowndes County School District bus overturned Tuesday afternoon in a crash that injured 16 students and two adults, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
One student was airlifted from the scene to Birmingham, Alabama. Two others were taken to a Columbus hospital before being transferred by air to Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson for further medical evaluation, MHP said.
The crash occurred around 3:15 p.m. on Highway 45. According to troopers, the bus was headed north when a car pulled into its path from Artesia Road.
The bus rolled over during the crash, ejecting several children.
MHP confirmed that 22 students were aboard the bus, with 16 reported injured. The two injured adults brought the total number of people hurt to 18.
