Turnout, level of competition at Alcorn Central Invitational shows areas new sports obsession with volleyball
Between the 2017 school sports season and this year, more than 200 schools in the Magnolia State have started a new sport that has quickly morphed into a source of large crowds and enthusiastic participants.
That sport is volleyball, and Saturdays Alcorn Central Invitational was an example of the dedication shown to the sport which had all but taken the place of slow pitch softball.
There were crowds at the gym at 8:30 and some were there into the evening hours watching 10 teams from three states compete in a competition that was ultimately won by Corinth.
All 4 schools in Alcorn County competed, with good showings from all. Alcorn Central and Corinth found themselves in the final four teams competing. Fans from all schools turned out in droves and were loud for their respective teams.
Yes, volleyball is here and it’s here to say.
If Saturday is any indication, Alcorn County is one of the hubs of all of the action.
