Bears are naturally active and on the move in July, experts say

Wildlife officials say July is a peak time for bear activity across the region. Young male bears often travel hundreds of miles from their birth areas in search of new territories, while adult bears remain more active during the breeding season, which continues through the summer.

Officials emphasize that sightings of bears during this time are common and usually not cause for concern. Such movement is considered normal behavior. Residents are encouraged to report sightings at MDWFP.com and to contact authorities at 1-800-BE-SMART if they encounter aggressive bears, property damage, or injured animals.

To stay safe, experts recommend keeping a safe distance from bears, never feeding or approaching them, and securing attractants such as garbage and pet food. Giving bears space typically allows them to continue on their way without conflict.
