Mississippi educators face delays in classroom supply reimbursements, audit finds

The Mississippi Office of the State Auditor is continuing its review of the state’s program to reimburse teachers for classroom supplies, according to a report released last year and followed up on recently.

While teachers are expected to have fully equipped classrooms before students arrive, the Mississippi Department of Education cannot ensure that funds are available before the start of the school year, the audit states. The department also struggles to process reimbursements efficiently and timely, the report adds.

Officials said the department’s shortcomings hinder teachers’ ability to purchase supplies where they see fit, despite public trust in educators’ judgment. The audit recommends reforms to improve the program and reduce delays in reimbursements.

State auditors expressed hope that MDE will implement suggested changes to make the process easier for teachers in the upcoming school year.
