Mississippi reports over $1.2 billion sent to nonprofits since 2023
Mississippi state agencies have sent more than $1.2 billion to nonprofit organizations since fiscal year 2023, according to a report released in May 2025 by the state’s office.
The report highlights that prior to this, government offices in Mississippi could not identify the total taxpayer money paid to nonprofits. This lack of oversight created opportunities for fraud, waste, and abuse, the office said.
The office has emphasized the importance of oversight and efforts to combat misuse of funds. Starting in 2027, the “Mississippi Grant and Subgrant Administration Transparency and Accountability of Non-Governmental Organizations Act of 2026” will support these efforts, the report states.
