NEMCC Punter Sherman Named Conference Player of the Week
Northeast Mississippi Community College sophomore Daniel Sherman has been named the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) Special Teams Player of the Week, making him the first NEMCC football player of the week honoree this season, according to Northeast Athletics.
A Big Night Against Mississippi Delta
Sherman earned the award after the Tigers’ week-seven home win over Mississippi Delta Community College. The Booneville school says he was strong in every phase of the kicking game:
- Averaged 47.3 yards on four punts, with every punt landing inside the 20-yard line
- Hit a career-long 64-yard punt at the end of Northeast’s first drive of the night
- Added a 50-plus-yard punt in the third quarter
- Made all five of his extra-point attempts
- Averaged 60.5 yards on six kickoffs, including one touchback
According to the release, Mississippi Delta’s average starting field position after Sherman’s punts was its own 14-yard line.
Coach: “A Huge Weapon”
Head coach Greg Davis called it a fantastic game for Sherman. “He’s been a big, huge weapon for us all season long,” Davis said, adding that the team is excited about his progression.
Sherman said he has reached a point where he feels comfortable and natural. “I’ve been working and working and working,” he said.
Building on an All-Conference Freshman Year
A Northwest Rankin High School graduate, Sherman was an all-conference performer as a freshman while handling only punting duties. He led the MACCC with 26 punts that stopped inside the 20-yard line and ranked second in Mississippi with 1,905 total punt yards, a 40.5-yard average.
This season that average is up by more than two yards. Through Northeast’s first seven games, 20 of Sherman’s 30 punts have rolled inside the 20. He is also third on the team in scoring with 16 points from extra points and field goals.
The Tigers have since followed the Delta win with a victory at Pearl River Community College, their second straight game with 35 points.
