NEMCC Volleyball Sweeps Coahoma to Open Fall Break Homestand
NEMCC volleyball needed only three sets to handle Coahoma Community College on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Bonner Arnold Coliseum in Booneville. Northeast Mississippi Community College won 25-10, 25-9, 25-14, giving the Tigers their fourth win in MACCC play and their second sweep of Coahoma this season.
The win opened a three-match homestand over fall break and lifted Northeast to 11-14 overall and 4-2 in the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference.
How NEMCC Volleyball Controlled Every Set
Northeast took advantage of Coahoma errors early in the first set. Addy Hicks set the tone with a kill from the pin, and Kaylee Estes and Addi Vetovitz added kills as the lead grew to as many as 15 points. Hicks closed the set with her third kill for a 25-10 win.
The second set opened with a 9-0 Northeast run, started by an Eliza Whitenton kill. Defensive specialist Bailey Reese Jones turned a dig into a point that dropped in on Coahoma’s side, and Hicks finished the set with another kill for a 25-9 win.
Coahoma grabbed an early lead in the third set, but Northeast’s serving turned the momentum and forced a Coahoma timeout. Carine Delfin and Lexi McBrayer each served two aces in the set as Northeast piled up six aces in the frame. Ryan Brown added four kills from the right side, and her last one sealed the 25-14 win and the sweep.
Key Numbers From the Sweep
- Addy Hicks: match-high 10 kills on .350 hitting
- Carine Delfin: 15 digs and two aces
- Eliza Whitenton: team-high four of Northeast’s 13 service aces
- Team: .253 hitting percentage and 50 digs, while holding Coahoma to negative (-.101) hitting
Whitenton, who earned MACCC Offensive Player of the Week honors last month after setting a program record for kills in a match, was also named one of NEMCC’s September Athletes of the Month.
