Alcorn County roundup, Oct. 9, 2026: Flood watch ahead of weekend rain; Corinth sales-tax payment rises

Alcorn County is under a flood watch from 1 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, through 7 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, as the remnants of Hurricane Isaias threaten heavy rain across Corinth and surrounding communities. The National Weather Service in Memphis issued the watch Thursday, warning that creeks, streams and low-lying roads could flood.

This Oct. 9 edition covers stories originally published from Oct. 8 at 4:30 p.m. through Oct. 9 at 4:30 p.m. Central.

Flood watch brings weekend preparations

The Thursday outlook called for 1 to 3 inches of rain, with locally higher totals up to 4 inches, and Saturday wind gusts as high as 40 mph. Those are forecast conditions; a watch means flooding is possible, rather than already occurring. Rainfall amounts remain subject to changes in the storm’s track.

The Alcorn County Electric Power Association said Thursday it was preparing for the weather and urged members to prepare as well. Residents are advised to charge phones, secure loose outdoor items, clear gutters and storm drains, and have several ways to receive warnings. Drivers should avoid roads covered by water. The report also notes that Alcorn County’s burn ban is set to expire Oct. 12. Read the flood-watch report and preparation guidance.

Corinth’s latest monthly sales-tax payment increases

Corinth received $686,581.32 in its mid-September sales-tax payment, an increase of $47,916.26, or about 7.5 percent, over the comparable payment a year earlier. The figures come from the Mississippi Department of Revenue’s August 2026 diversion report, cited alongside reporting by the Daily Corinthian.

The payment was the last booked in the city’s fiscal year ending Sept. 30. The 7.5 percent comparison applies to that monthly payment. Separately, state fiscal-year-to-date diversions since July 1 totaled $1,405,672.89, up about 6.2 percent. Read the sales-tax figures and area comparisons.

Farm to Fork ticket deadline is Friday

The Crossroads Museum lists Friday, Oct. 9, as the final day to buy tickets for its Farm to Fork fundraiser. The colonial-themed dinner begins Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. at Franklin Courtyard, 201 Franklin St., in Corinth. Tickets cost $75 per person, and proceeds support the museum.

The program includes catering by Datan’s Pie Shoppe & Catering and a screening of the film “1776.” The museum has not advertised tickets at the door; readers should contact it about remaining availability. Read the dinner and ticket details.
