Alcorn County roundup, Oct. 11, 2026: Corinth mayoral vote Tuesday; heat returns after scant rain

CORINTH — Corinth voters will choose among four mayoral candidates Tuesday, Oct. 13, with all city ballots cast at City Hall. The election approaches as newly published Alcorn County News reports describe scant rainfall from Isaias, lingering severe drought and a forecast return to highs near 90 degrees this week.

This roundup covers stories originally published from 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, through 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, Central time.

Four candidates seek Corinth mayor’s office

Incumbent Republican Ralph Dance, Democrat Nestly Gates and independents Tommy Irwin and Taylor Coombs Moak are on the ballot. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the fire department bay at Corinth City Hall, 300 Childs Street, for registered voters who live inside the city limits. Voters need an acceptable photo ID; anyone in line at 7 p.m. may still vote, according to the site’s election report citing the Daily Corinthian and WTVA.

The mayor’s race is the municipal ballot’s only contested election. Alcorn County residents outside Corinth do not vote in it. Tuesday’s election is separate from the Nov. 3 general election, for which absentee voting is taking place at the Alcorn County Circuit Clerk’s office. Scant storm rain gives way to heat

Corinth’s Roscoe Turner Airport recorded 0.42 inch of rain Saturday, plus a trace after midnight, according to Sunday’s report citing airport observations. That fell below the 1 to 2.5 inches forecast in the National Weather Service’s flood watch. The Oct. 6 U.S. Drought Monitor map placed all of Alcorn and Tishomingo counties in severe drought.

The Weather Service’s Sunday forecast for Corinth called for highs near 90 Monday, 91 Tuesday, 92 Wednesday and 91 Thursday, before a high near 83 Friday. Forecasters described temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above normal and possible daily records across the Mid-South, with low confidence in meaningful rain from a weak Wednesday disturbance. Alcorn’s burn ban is listed to expire Monday, Oct. 12; Sunday’s report said no extension had been announced as of that morning. Read the Sunday rainfall, drought and heat report.

The newer outlook follows Saturday’s Weather Service coverage, which described Isaias weakening into a post-tropical system and warmer weather returning as its remnants moved away.

Saturday wind caused Glen and Corinth outages

ACE Power reported a large outage in Glen and a damaged pole behind Belk in Corinth on Saturday afternoon. Its system graphic showed 498 outages at 2:30 p.m.; by 3:45 p.m., the co-op said crews had identified Glen’s problem and were making repairs. Tishomingo County Electric Power Association also reported outages and a downed wire on Highway 25 south of Littrell Lumber.

PowerOutage.us listed about 280 Alcorn County customers without service around 5 p.m. Saturday, according to the site’s report. These are Saturday’s figures, and the source does not establish a Sunday outage total or final restoration time. Read the Glen and Corinth outage report.
