ALCORN COUNTY, Miss. — Alcorn Central’s Purple Pride marching band earned a second-place finish and two caption awards at the Sept. 26 Crossroads Marching Classic in Corinth, leading a weekend that also brought football wins for Kossuth and Alcorn Central and career mentoring from Corinth police.

Alcorn Central earns two caption awards at Corinth competition

Alcorn Central placed second in the Class 3A band standings at the Sept. 26 Crossroads Marching Classic, held at Corinth High School’s Warrior Stadium. The Glen school’s band also won the class awards for best drum major and best percussion, according to results organizers posted after the competition.

Mooreville won Class 3A, followed by Alcorn Central, Hardin County and Tishomingo County. New Albany was named grand champion across all classes, Ripley was reserve grand champion and Mooreville finished third overall. Bands from North Mississippi and West Tennessee competed in four classes, with judging for drum major, color guard, percussion and overall performance.

Kossuth and Alcorn Central post Friday football wins

Kossuth defeated North Pontotoc 35-21 and Alcorn Central beat Biggersville 26-8 in games played Friday, Sept. 25, according to the area scoreboard report published Saturday. The Alcorn Central-Biggersville matchup was an all-Alcorn County game.

Corinth was idle during the Sept. 25 slate. The Warriors, 2-2 through four games in the schedule cited by the report, are set to host South Pontotoc at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2. Other area results included Booneville’s 31-21 win over Ripley, Red Bay’s 22-20 overtime victory over Belmont and Adamsville’s 55-35 win against Tishomingo County.

Corinth officers discuss law-enforcement careers with students

Corinth Police Department Maj. Ben Moore and officers Eli Buse and Shyanne Middleton visited the Alcorn Career and Technology Center’s Law and Public Safety program to discuss the process and physical standards for becoming a Mississippi police officer.

The officers spoke about what departments look for in applicants, the fitness standards recruits must meet and their own experiences on the job, according to the center. The school said the visit gave students practical career information from community partners. The program lets high school students explore public-safety work before graduation.
