CORINTH, Miss. — Corinth’s Oct. 13 mayoral election drew steady absentee voting, with 107 ballots cast by early afternoon Sept. 25, according to a report published by Alcorn County News on Sept. 28. The four-candidate race leads this edition, alongside a Corinth High academic honor, an upcoming artifact show, the drought outlook and a regional port expansion.
Absentee voting continues in four-way mayoral race
Alcorn County News, citing the Daily Corinthian, reported the absentee total as Corinth prepared for its municipal general election. The mayoral candidates are incumbent Republican Ralph Dance, Democrat Nestly Gates and independents Tommy Irwin and Taylor Coombs Moak, according to the article’s account of WTVA’s primary coverage.
Eligible absentee voters can cast ballots at City Hall, 300 Childs Street, during regular business hours. The article lists election-day polling hours as 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 13 and directs questions about absentee voting or polling places to City Hall at 662-286-6644. Corinth High’s Thomas Senf earns National Merit recognition
Corinth High School senior Thomas Senf has been named a semifinalist in the 72nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program, the Corinth School District announced. He is among about 16,000 semifinalists nationwide competing for roughly 6,700 scholarships worth nearly $24 million.
The district said Senf earned an AICE diploma with distinction, scored 35 on the ACT and ranked first in his class. His activities include robotics, the academic team and band. He plans to study biology on a pre-medicine track, with a psychology minor.
Free artifact show set for Oct. 3 at Crossroads Arena
The Magnolia State Archaeological Society will host the Corinth Indian Artifact Show from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Crossroads Arena, 2800 Harper Road. Admission is free. Displays will feature Native American projectile points and other artifacts.
Organizers plan awards for recent finds, educational displays, best of show and the featured Pine Tree point type. Exhibitors must belong to the hosting society or the Central States Archaeological Societies to qualify for awards. September 27 forecast points to heat before rain chances
The National Weather Service forecast cited in Sunday’s report called for Corinth highs near 89 on Sept. 30 and 90 on Oct. 1, followed by 50% rain chances Oct. 2 and Oct. 3. Those figures reflect the Sept. 27 forecast, rather than a new forecast issued with this delayed edition.
The report said all of Alcorn County was in at least moderate drought in the cited U.S. Drought Monitor assessment, with about 86% in severe drought. It cautioned that the amount of potential rain and its effect on drought remained uncertain.
Yellow Creek Port expansion advances near Iuka
Construction is underway on a nearly $13 million expansion of Yellow Creek State Inland Port in Tishomingo County. The report places the project in the context of industrial recruitment across the Alcorn, Prentiss and Tishomingo county area.
According to the governor’s office as cited by Alcorn County News, the work includes a 212-foot extension of the existing 400-foot dock, four mooring cells, rail and pavement improvements and a 700-ton crane. Funding includes $9 million from the Appalachian Regional Commission, $2.5 million from the state multimodal fund and about $1.36 million from the port authority. No completion date was announced.
