Halloween Costume Tips from a Corinth Comic Con Judge

With Halloween two weeks away, a cosplay judge from the Corinth area is sharing simple Halloween costume tips that can make homemade outfits look more polished without spending much money, according to the Daily Corinthian.

Meet the Expert

Kerri Bland has 12 years of cosplay experience and judged the seventh Corinth Comic Con. She offered practical advice for anyone putting together a costume for trick-or-treating, a party or a fall event.

Make Plastic Look Less Plastic

Shiny costume pieces can look cheap in photos and in person. Bland suggests using dry shampoo or baby powder to dull shiny areas so props and costume pieces look more realistic.

Wig and Hair Tricks

  • Use Sharpies to darken wig roots or add lowlights for a more natural look.
  • Wash wigs in fabric softener to help them look and feel better.

Save Money and Stay Comfortable

Costumes do not have to be expensive. Dollar stores and Walmart carry affordable supplies, and costumes can be bought, made by hand or thrifted. Bland also recommends sewing or gluing pieces so they stay in place all night.

On makeup, she advises people to go only as far as they are comfortable. “Give grace where it is due, because it takes practice,” she said.

Keep the Right Attitude

Finally, Bland says a good attitude matters. A costume may not turn out exactly as imagined, and that is part of the fun.

Quick checklist for Alcorn County costume makers:

  • Dull shiny plastic with dry shampoo or baby powder
  • Darken wig roots with a Sharpie
  • Shop dollar stores, Walmart or thrift shops
  • Sew or glue loose pieces
  • Keep makeup within your comfort level
