Mississippi passes law criminalizing illegal immigration

Mississippi lawmakers have approved a bill that makes illegal immigration a state crime, fulfilling a legislative priority for State Auditor Shad White.

White championed the measure last year, traveling across the state to garner support. After years of efforts, the bill was finally passed into law, according to the auditor’s office.

The state’s office of the auditor estimates that Mississippi taxpayers spend more than $100 million annually on costs related to illegal immigration. The new law is set to take effect on July 1.

Supporters say the legislation will help ensure that state funds are allocated to Mississippi citizens rather than illegal immigrants.
