Mississippi wildlife officials conclude Memorial Day boating safety enforcement
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks wrapped up a Memorial Day weekend safety and enforcement campaign on Mississippi’s waterways. Conservation officers contacted more than 2,800 boaters across the state to promote safety and compliance, according to department officials.
During the effort, officers issued 296 citations for violations including license issues, failure to wear a personal flotation device, and reckless operation of vessels. Seven arrests were made for boating under the influence, the department said.
There was a noticeable decline in the number of PFD citations compared to last year. MDWFP officials credited increased awareness and safety measures, noting the importance of life jackets in preventing drownings. The department thanked boaters who prioritized safety by keeping life jackets onboard.
As summer progresses and water recreation rises, MDWFP reminded boaters of safety requirements. These include carrying a USCG-approved life jacket for each person, ensuring PFDs are in good condition, and keeping them accessible. Children 12 and younger must wear a life jacket at all times while the vessel is underway. The agency emphasized that operating a vessel under the influence remains illegal and dangerous.
MDWFP officials said they will continue monitoring boating activity throughout the summer to ensure a safe environment for all water enthusiasts.
